The Sennachie Festival 23rd - 24th May 2025

Come join us at The Old Brewery in Cromarty for a weekend filled with music, storytelling, poetry, ponderings and inspirations as some of Scotland's finest musicians and writers gather to celebrate Hugh Miller and his passion for the folklore of his surroundings and the folk of Cromarty who knew him as The Sennachie . Be prepared to be transported to different worlds through the power of words, music, song and imagination.

We have a wonderful array of musicians, authors and poets lined up.

Dr Lori Watson, Lecturer in Scottish Ethnology, Celtic & Scottish Studies, University of Edinburgh, will help chair the weekend’s events. Lori is also an award winning singer and musician (& former member of the renowned Trad music group Malinky), and will be joined over the weekend by award-winning musicians Duncan Lyall, Gillian Fleetwood and C Duncan. We also have two brilliant Black Isle poets lined up: Cait O’Neill McCullough and Gill Shaw.

The weekend will also include discussion sessions on: Miller’s Scenes and Legends with Scottish author James Robertson and Miller expert Professor Ralph O’Connor, and a discussion of storytelling in popular science writing with palaeontologists Elsa Panciroli and Ross Barnett.

Cromarty-born Hugh Miller was hugely passionate in gathering and retelling the stories of the past and of the working folk around him. He would document a few of these in his book Scenes and Legends of the North of Scotland, which celebrates its 190th publication anniversary in 2025. Miller was known in and around Cromarty as a Sennachie, gaelic for ‘storyteller’ and ‘keeper of stories’.

Our 2025 AGM will be held on the afternoon of Friday 23rd May 2025 at the Old Brewery in Cromarty, the Black Isle. Timings will be confirmed shortly.
